John Albion Andrew
The former governor of Massachusetts served during the Civil War.
Andrew shocked locals at the time by accepting an invitation to Thanksgiving dinner with a black family. There, his friend and host who had escaped slavery, convinced Andrew that black men should be allowed to fight in the Union Army -- the 54th and 55th Regiment.
