Life with ALS
Gertrude Lawrence, 76, of Mattapan was diagnosed ALS in Dec. 2005. In this interview, recorded by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center where she is a patient and provided to The Globe with her permission, she reads an "ethical will" she wrote to her family members, including Rufus Lawrence, her husband of 52 years. The disease "is a tough one," she said. "It's very hard to take one day at a time. If you think about it too much it's awfully scary."
