More than 300 student-athletes from Boston University read to more than 600 elementary school children in Boston Public Schools and gave the youngsters books last week as part of the BU Athletic Department’s 16th annual holiday reading program, officials said.
Last Thursday and Friday, the college athletes visited schools in Allston-Brighton, Chinatown, East Boston, Roxbury, and the South End, according to a press release from the university.
"We hope the BU student-athlete holiday reading program inspired all of the Boston school children to emulate the wonderful success and caring for others that the BU student-athletes demonstrate," said a statement from BU community relations director Joe Walsh. "It was our pleasure to see BU's best and brightest out in the community as mentors and role models once again."
BU donated a book to each student and a book to each classroom for the teacher's permanent collection, the release said. The young students and their administrators were also give vouchers for free tickets to upcoming BU athletic events.
