What's Happening at This Week's Boston Ski & Snowboard Expo

I love après ski -- chatting it up with fellow downhill friends, talking gear and where we plan to ski next. From November 13 to 16, I will be at a huge après ski party with hundreds of skiers and snowboarders, although it's technically a pre-ski event. It's the Boston Ski show, a pre-season pump at the sprawling Seaport World Trade Center designed for New England skiers and riders to kickstart their alpine energy. Ski resort reps will be on hand, giving out discount tickets and trinkets. A Long Trail beer garden, live bands, and celebs from the US Ski Team and Warren Miller movies will also be present, making the Ski Show as crucial to getting ready for the season as ramping up your squats and wall sits.

Giveaways and goodies are tossed around the Expo like snowballs at a November Pat’s game, and I am bringing a bag to carry all the swag. The East Coast Alpine sale should be huge. If you are looking for deals on gear, keep your eyes open for deep discounts on brand-new skis and snowboards.

I am most stoked for the new Vertical Runway Fashion Show, which combines two things I love – skiing and clothes. Local models will strut the catwalk while sporting the latest trends from Burton, Volkl, RIDE, Eider, Smith Optics, Powder Room, Ripzone, and Mountain Hardwear. Sponsored by Stowe and WAAF, the ski fashion show is produced by stylist Kathy Benharris, who says the ski slopes are usually her runway. You can catch the Vertical Runway Fashion Show Thursday and Friday at 4, 6, and 8 pm, Saturday and Sunday at noon, 2, and 4 pm, and also at 6pm on Saturday.

The Boston Ski and Snowboard Expo has family activities as well. Burton brings a Riglet Learn to Snowboard Park, Wachusett is setting up a Kids Snowpark and Learning Center, and there will be an interactive Nordic Village. For entertainment, the professional Trampoline Show Skyriders will perform freestyle aerials. Live music rocks Frank FM’s stage and WBZ-TV will display its mobile weather lab -- which, cross your fingers, will predict lots of snow.

The 32nd annual Boston Ski and Snowboard Expo at the Seaport World Trade Center opens Thursday November 13 at 3 pm. It runs Thursday and Friday from 3 to 10 pm, Saturday 10 am to 8 pm, and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. Tickets are $15, and can be purchased at the door. (Children 12 and under get in for free.) Your ticket purchase includes a year’s subscription to SKI or Skiing magazine and a $10 Liftopia Gift Card. You can get a $3 off coupon and more info about the Show here.

If you have old skis kicking around your basement, bring them to the ski show; you can donate them to Skichair.com, which will turn them into alpine furniture.

See you at the Boston Ski Show, and see you on the slopes!
