While poison ivy is prevalent on the East coast, the West coast has its own variation, poison oak. Columbia, Calif. holds a Poison Oak Festival yearly for curious fans of this relative of poison ivy. Poison oak is a little less skilled at climbing because it has useless root hairs used to try to climb things. Poison ivy however, has hairier, thicker vines, usually between 1 to 3 inches that can be used to climb things.
