"Look at nature, work independently, and solve your own problems, Winslow Homer advised. A renowned painter, he was born in Boston, raised in Cambridge, and lived most of his life along the New England coastline. For a time, he even lived in a lighthouse in Gloucester. Homer began his career as a commercial illustrator, but soon yearned for artistic freedom. While he achieved critical praise throughout most of his career, it wasnt until late in his life that he achieved financial success. From intimate scenes of violence and camp life during the Civil War to sun-kissed beaches in Barbados, his work is characterized by an austere, yet authentic moodiness.
