Short of the halfway point, the Hermit Lake Shelter is a symbolic transition point on the trail. The view into Tuckerman Ravine from here is worth a stop (as is the chance to get a rest), but the summit was still fogged in on the day of our hike. The trail changes by an order of magnitude in terms of difficulty after the Hermit Lake Shelter, heading steeply up the mountain.
