Quite possibly New Englands most approachable city, Portland, Maine, though small by most standards, has more to offer than its size suggests. Historic buildings and sea-weathered wharfs are spread across a variety of neighborhoods and districts, and its easy to get around simply by walking. Those familiar with Boston may find this city of 65,000 to be a roomier version of the North End.
