The tiny bookstore looks out on Rockport Harbor and is crammed floor to ceiling. Whalen, a landscape photographer, opened for business 11 years ago in Rockports old schoolhouse, a space that was half darkroom and half store. In 2000 he moved down the block and now prints pictures at home. In summer Rockport is home to the Maine Photographic Workshops. Whalen figures that 80 percent of his business comes from this summer crowd. A store like this would not work very many other places, he says. There are only a couple of photo bookstores in the country. Whalen is most interested in self-published books, remainders, and rare books but he stocks the books by photographers associated with the workshops and general books for students. Look out for signed volumes by workshop photographers including Eugene Richards, Duane Michals, Sally Mann, and Antonin Kratochvil.
