The Shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes in Litchfield, Conn., celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of Lourdes in France, of which it is a replica. The main shrine, built by the Missionaries of the Company of Mary, consists of a grotto created in honor Our Lady of Lourdes and built from local fieldstone. A highlight here is an interactive stations of the cross a quarter-mile in length where worshipers can wash their hands as Pontius Pilate did, and children are invited to carry a cross on the wooded trail. There are mini-shrines to Saints Michael, Jude, Joseph, and Louis de Monfort.
