Theres a lot going on beneath the Shrine of the Little Flower in Burrillville, R.I., a gorgeous rural testimony to St. Theresa. Below the stairs is a little grotto, dark and moody, holding religious statuary, including Jesus supine body after the crucifixion, and all about it are handwritten notes from visitors, some desperate, some thankful, all filled with hope. This shrine, one of the first in the United States dedicated to St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, began in 1923 and was added to over the years. The church and rectory are set magnificently on hilly, wind-swept land along with scala sancta, holy stairs, leading to a reproduction of the Limpias Crucifix and a shrine of candles. Outside there are granite stations of the cross and a glorious outdoor altar where Masses are said in fair weather.
