6. Frenchman bay
The first time I ever seakayaked was with my wife, Lisa, in Frenchman Bay around Acadia National Park in Maine. The day before, we had been stuck in traffi c on the congested Park Loop. Now we were breathing in the salty air and looking at Cadillac Mountain from a distance, happily. On the half-day guided tour, we paddled around the northern shores of Bar Island, saw brightpink starfi sh sunning on the rocks, and then went around Sheep Porcupine Island, where harbor seals popped up their heads like periscopes. In a double kayak, Lisa and I paddled in tandem, taking in the sights the perfect antidote to driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic. A guided tour meets at the Coastal Kayaking retail shop, 48 Cottage Street in downtown Bar Harbor, acadiafun.com; cost, including sea-kayak rentals, is $48 per person.
