3056152631_6d894735af_m.jpgThe Queen Elizabeth 2, known to most as the QE2 that sailed the Atlantic for almost 40 years and recently was docked in New York City, will soon become a 400-room luxury hotel in Asia.

According to a Bloomberg report, plans to convert the ship to a five-star hotel are underway:

“The QE2 is not being scrapped, quite the opposite,” Oceanic Group Managing Director Daniel Chui told reporters in Dubai today. “We will lavish many, many millions of dollars on this magnificent ship to restore her the splendor of her glory days.”

The ship was originally slated for docking in Dubai but the company that purchased it, Istithmar World PJSC, was dissolved of its board and Drydocks World, a unit of state-owned Dubai World, retained ownership of the QE2.

Drydocks Chairman Khamis Buamim told Bloomberg the ship is expected to be a moored hotel by January 2014, but there is no confirmation on where in Asia it will be based.

The QE2 set sail to New York on its maiden voyage in 1969 from Southampton, England. According to the website, the ship held more than 1,900 passengers and a crew of more than 1,000.

“As a luxury hotel, the QE2 will take her place alongside the great heritage hotels of Asia, including the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong, the Peace Hotel in Shanghai, the Grand Hotel in Taipei and the Rex Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City,” Oceanic Group said on its website.
