Thanks to January being one of the slowest travel months of the year, hotels deals abound in the Big Apple. From Times Square to SoHo, hotels are dropping their prices, offering discounts on tours, and one of the city's top tourist attractions is getting into the game with 2-for-1 sales on Broadway shows. Pack up, and take advantage of New York off-season with some of these great offerings:
Where to stay:
For luxury travelers on a budget, NYC & Company, the official marketing and tourism organization for the city, is launching its first-ever "Get More NYC" hotels promotion. From Jan. 2 to Feb. 29, more than 120 New York hotels are offering complimentary upgrades, free nights for longer stays, shopping and shows packages, and specials that include complimentary breakfast or discounts on hotel dining. What you save depends on what you want. When you visit the site, choose your category: Upgrade More, Stay More, Enjoy More, and Discover More. From there, you'll find the hotels that are hosting deals based on your preferences. The best part: Get More NYC includes hotels that range from budget to luxury, so the deals are at your disposal.
For families, hotel room size in New York is often a problem. The solution: The Residence Inn, Times Square - a full-service hotel with kitchenettes in each room (complete with a dishwasher, dishes, flatware, coffee pot and complimentary coffee), sleeper sofas and a complimentary breakfast buffet for each member of your family daily during your stay. The location at 39th and 6th Avenues is two blocks from Bryant Park and Times Square, making it an easy and affordable solution for families who might otherwise spend too much money on cab rides around the city.
The hotel also offers a "Walk New York City" mobile app, which allows you to download walking tours of various neighborhoods in New York, allowing you to forgo traditional pricey tours for a more go-with-the-flow journey. You can download the tours from the hotel's Facebook page ahead of time and get the kids involved in trip-planning. The Residence Inn at Times Square is currently offering a winter getaway deal: book your weekend escape ahead of time (read: plan now for February school vacation) and save up to 15% off rates. The deal is good through March 15 and rates range from $179-$219.
Tip: take advantage of the breakfast buffet here. For families, it will save you a load of money on food, and it's one of the few places in the city you'll everything from pancakes to French toast and fresh fruit as part of your hotel stay.
For last-minute travelers, New York Hotel Week happens Jan. 6-15, with rates as low as $100 a night. The eight hotels participating in the program, including the trendy Gansevoort Park Avenue, will block out rooms for $100, $200 or $250. The closer you get to the city, the more expensive the rooms.
What to do:
Also happening in January is Broadway Week. Taking place Jan. 17-Feb. 4, top Broadway shows - including Chicago, The Lion King, Mamma Mia and Spider Man - are available on a 2-for-1 sale. There are restrictions, of course: Blackout dates, seat selections and service fees are part of the deal, but if you act fast you can see a show at a steal. Tickets go on sale Jan. 4 (they're currently on sale for AARP members) - you grab them while you can.
