There’s a new high-speed ferry service between Newport and Block Island, run by Interstate Navigation Company, also long-time current provider of ferry service to the Block from Point. Judith in Narragansett. The high-speed M.V. Islander, which made its inaugural run June 29 and will continue through Sept. 2, departs daily from Perrotti Park in downtown Newport at 9 a.m., 12:05 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., and leaves Block Island at 10:30 a.m. and 5:05 p.m. The Islander is a newly renovated, state-of-the-art, high-speed catamaran with three decks and two airconditioned cabins with airline-style seating, flat-screen satellite TVs and a full-service concession center and bar.
The trip is roughly 70 minutes each way, and round-trip fares are $50.50 for adults, $26 for children, and $12 per bicycle. The concept is to give riders from Block Island the chance to leave in the morning, explore Newport all day and get back in the evening, said Joshua Linda, vice president of Interstate Navigation. Previously, had been traditional ferry service from Newport to the Block since the 1980s, a two-hour roundtrip with just one trip out of Newport in the morning and another back in the afternoon. With the new high-speed ferry, Linda said, travelers now have more time to explore both of two of Rhode Island’s top tourist destinations.
