Those of us who love contemporary basketry and Native American artistic traditions have a special treat coming up next weekend. On Saturday, Dec. 8, the 2012 Maine Indian Basketmakers Sale and Demonstration takes over the Collins Center for the Arts at the University of Maine, Orono. Doors open at 9 a.m. and technical demonstrations begin at 10:30. The annual event is New England's largest holiday season gathering of Maine Indian artists. Featured artists will include sweetgrass and brown ash basketmakers, birchbark artists, carvers, and beadworkers. Demonstrations will be augmented by storytelling, traditional music, drumming, and dancing. More information is available at 207-581-1904 or by visiting the web site of the university's Hudson Museum.
