paradisesillgsm.jpg Why do St. Lucians seem warmer and livelier than some of their island neighbors? My guess is their fusion of African, Carib, Amerindian, French, and English ways. With a touch of Dutch Jewish heritage and a love of silk and rich dyes, Daniel Jean-Baptiste paints with quintessentially Lucian sunniness -- even though, or maybe because, Canada for many years was his home. But Baptiste, who returned to the island with his family in 1995, is about to grow his island presence. He's been restoring a beautiful house in northerly Cap Estate and will soon open his own gallery. Recently he also began leading 4-day silk workshops for small groups. His work is in the collections of Paul Simon and Lucian-born Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott, among others. goliathsm.jpg tranquility.jpg
