Direct Air, the public charter airline that offers the only scheduled service out of Worcester Regional Airport, has cancelled all its flights through May 15, leaving the beleaguered airport without commercial flights for the third time in nine years.
“Direct Air finds it necessary to suspend flight operation from Tuesday, March 13, 2012 until May 15, 2012,” the airline posted on its website. “This decision was made to address operational matters. We are currently evaluating strategic alternatives for Direct Air. Direct Air is committed to our passengers, employees, and the communities we serve.”
The airline directed passengers with reservations between Tuesday and May 15 to contact their credit card companies to arrange for a refund.
The airline, which is based in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and flies to 17 destinations in the Midwest, East, and South, left passengers stranded at several airports on Monday. Out of Worcester, the airline has three daily flights apiece to Punta Gorda, Fla. (near Ft. Myers), Sanford, Fla. (near Orlando), West Palm Beach, Fla., and Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.
