Ironically for a city founded by Bahamians, Miami hasn't had a great conch kitchen -- unless you count the ones in peoples' homes -- until now. Recently, I followed church goers in Coconut Grove's historic African American community to the vacant lot at the corner of Douglas and Grand Ave. where Beau's Cafe On Wheels dishes conch fritters, fried fish and the best pork souse this side of the Caribbean Sea. The truck is the brainchild of police officer Beau Leonard, whose neighborhood jazz festival last year was another inspired idea bringing the storied community together. No dainty bites or trendy sliders here. My plate of conch fritters ($10) came mounded with steaming rice and peas and crisp homemade cole slaw -- enough food for two people. With just one chef serving the masses, I waited an hour with my fellow eaters for the fryolator to come on line. But on a lazy Sunday with the Miami sun streaming down, it was worth it.
