There are few places colder than the Boston waterfront in winter. But the Fairmont Battery Wharf, an upscale hotel that opened in December 2008 on Boston Harbor, is turning up the heat by offering discounted cold-weather rates.
The deepest is the Fairmont's "Everyone’s an Original" special, with rates starting at $199, roughly 20 percent off the regular rate, available through April of next year.
The hotel also has a "Freedom Trail Discovery Package" starting at $249 a night that includes an overnight stay and two passes to "Pirates, Privateers and Patriots," a tour led by an 18th-century costumed guide, good through Dec. 31. The "JFK Experience" package, starting at $219 a night and also running through Dec. 31, comes with an overnight and two tickets to the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum.
The Fairmont Battery Wharf, a series of four buildings on the waterfront, has 150 guest rooms, including 30 suites and 40 Fairmont Gold rooms, located in its own building where for an extra $100 a night, guests get a private lounge with free continental breakfast that includes a hot entree, free evening appetizers, coffee and tea throughout the day, and an honor bar for cocktails. The Fairmont Gold concierge service provides dinner reservations (the North End is a short walk away), sightseeing tours, and business services.
We stayed at Fairmont Gold one weekend night in a corner room with outstanding views of the harbor, with the roar of nearby Logan jets punctuating the calm but something we quickly got used to. The room was elegant, with marble bath, 300-thread-count Mascioni Italian linens, a Nespresso coffeemaker, and giant flat-screen, high-def TV. We had dinner at the hotel’s Sensing restaurant, run by France-born chef de cuisine Gerard Barbin and where for less than $150 (including drinks), we got a great meal that included ice-cold local oysters and a playful dessert with things like a most unusual and delectable root beer marshmallow. Try the “Sensing Snacking Platter,” a sampling of six regularly changing bites, a Sensing signature dish, with items ranging from lobster salad with butternut squash chutney and mango sauce to cauliflower and quince soup with chestnut foam.
The open kitchen is behind the restaurant bar area that includes the chef’s table made of hand-laid tiger-eye marble and lighted by contemporary pendants. Sheer curtains divide sections of the dining room, and a nice touch here is a purse-holder clip for the table, to keep pocketbooks off the floor.
Other touches include guest rooms featuring art from a number of local artists like Miriam Fried, Robert Bart, and Helen Shulman. Art abounds, including Nikolas Weinstein glass pieces in the lobby and atrium, and Obie Simonis sculpture in the hotel lobby.
A Fairmont Battery Wharf work in progress is the Exhale Spa, set to open in mid-January, a 12,000-square-foot space to include a well-being apothecary, yoga and workout spaces, 10 spa therapy rooms, and lounge.
