The Hotel Providence
311 Westminster St., Providence

What we liked most: Eating dinner at a Providence institution like L'Epicureo without leaving the hotel.

What we liked least: Not being able to indulge in a room-service breakfast.

What surprised us: How sleepy downtown was on Sunday, with few cafes and stores open for business.

You know you're in The Hotel Providence when . . .The Mona Lisa smiles at you over dinner.

Rates: Standard rooms $179-$319, deluxe rooms $199-$329, suites $299-$869, all depending on availability, day of the week, and season.

Directions: Providence is less than an hour's drive south of Boston. Take Interstate 95 south to exit 22A (Downtown/Memorial Boulevard). Drive straight on Memorial Boulevard to the fifth light and turn right on Westminster Street. Follow it to the corner of Mathewson Street, and turn right for valet parking. The hotel is also a five-minute walk from the Amtrak station.
