How to get there

The lowest round-trip air fare from Boston to Barcelona at press time was $476 on Air Italia. From Barcelona, it's possible to visit Girona and the Costa Brava without renting a car. The Ca2 train from Barcelona to Girona departs every hour, and takes slightly more than an hour. Buses run from Girona to Calella de Palafrugell. Cars can be rented at the train station in Girona. A Spain Flexipass costs $175 for second class and $225 for first class for three days of travel in two months. Rail and Drive versions are also available. A simple hotel in the heart of this seaside town. Former hangout of Rock Hudson, Kirk Douglas, Xavier Cugat, and other 1960s luminaries. Doubles about $85-$270.

Contemporary menu with a Catalan spin. Salads, grilled and roasted fish, pork with prawns, and duck with pears and cloves. $7.50-$16.

Bar Gelpi

Tasty tapas served beneath multicolored umbrellas by the sea. Croquettas, patatas ali oli, grilled sardines, calamari, tortilla Espanola, and more. $4-$12.

What to do
