Taking the plunge at the 2013 swim

The "L" Street Brownies have been starting the year with a bracing swim for more than a century. Dig your suit out of storage and join the hundreds of swimmers expected at the annual New Year's Day Swim. Spectators are also welcome. Creative costumes encouraged. The event is sponsored by the City of Boston, Boston Centers for Youth and Families, Curley Community Center, and the "L" Street Brownies. Jan. 1, swim starts at 9:30 a.m., registration 8 a.m. "K" Street entrance of the BCYF Curley Community Center, 1663 Columbia Rd., South Boston. Donations go to South Boston Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship Fund for South Boston high school seniors. 617-635-5104,
