Strawberry fields for saving

We celebrated the boyfriend's birthday at Somerville's Highland Kitchen Saturday night — a fabulous dinner set to an almost all-James Brown soundtrack, all within walking distance. How festive! (Not that we need a reason to go to our fave neighborhood restaurant. A Wednesday night is usually enough of an occasion for a drink or two.)

Anyways, after lobster-curry mussels, a tasty pappardelle bolognese, wine, and etc., we almost opted out of dessert. However, we luckily found that extra inch in our waistlines to split the delicious strawberry shortcake. Highland Kitchen is one of the local restaurants taking part in the Strawberry Dessert Festival to benefit Mass Farmers Markets. Through Sunday, these restaurants are using local strawberries to create a dessert of their choice and then donating part of the proceeds from the dessert sales to the markets. Check out the full list of participating restaurants here.

[It's berry cool to eat local.]

Bonus: Want to really get a sense of the local strawberry scene? We're talking dirt-under-the-fingernails, here. Check out our map for great pick-your-own options.
