Have a retro day in Boston

Writing's on the wall Once you get drawn in by the punchy, oversized images on the walls, you'll find it hard to stop flipping through the stacks on tables and in drawers at the International Poster Gallery . Owner Jim Lapides carries original posters from 1890 to the present representing a variety of artistic styles. Particularly hot right now? Mid-century modern designs. 'There's a story behind every poster, oftentimes many stories,' Lapides says. 'You can find all the layers of meaning and when you put it all together, it's fascinating.' The gallery stages about four exhibits a year — “Paper Wars,” a show starring propaganda posters from World Wars I and II, opened Thursday. Check out the charming vintage luggage labels, too. 205 Newbury St., Boston. 617-375-0076. internationalposter.com
