ESPN's record ratings for US-Ghana World Cup match include huge New England viewership

The United States's thrilling 2-1 victory over Ghana Monday drew a 10.0 overnight rating for ESPN, the highest ever for a World Cup match on the network or ESPN2, according to Nielsen. ESPN began receiving local World Cup ratings in 1998.

Washington, DC was the top metered market for the match (11.8 overnight rating). But ESPN received huge viewership from New England. Hartford-New Haven was fourth (10.1), Boston fifth (10.) and Providence eighth (8.4). In fact, Boston's rating is the highest overnight ever in the market for a World Cup match on any network.

Through the first 14 matches of the World Cup, the highest-rated markets in order are:

Washington (5.0), San Francisco (4.4), New York (4.1), Boston (3.8), Orlando (3.7), Los Angeles (3.7), Miami (3.7), Hartford (3.7), Atlanta (3.6) and Seattle, West Palm Beach and San Diego (a three-way tie at 3.4).
