Jeff Brown, who oversaw significant and sometimes controversial change at sports radio station WEEI since becoming Entercom Boston's vice president/market manager in Boston more than two years ago, left the company Monday to take the same position at Cumulus Media in Atlanta.

"I have nothing but great things to say about my time with Entercom and in Boston,'' said Brown, who worked at Entercom for 15 years, coming to Boston in June 2011 from the company's Portland market. "My wife is from Atlanta, and it's the right step for my family, the right fit for me."

WEEI, a sports-radio power in the Boston market since its switch to the format in the early '90s, has consistently fallen behind 98.5 The Sports Hub in the Arbitron ratings in recent years.

During Brown's time in Boston, WEEI incurred a number of major changes that would have been unthinkable during its heyday, including the dismissal of longtime host Glenn Ordway in February. Jason Wolfe, who oversaw WEEI's programming at its ratings peak, was fired in August.

Kevin Graham arrived shortly after Wolfe's dismissal as the brand manager.

Entercom expects to announce a new market manager for Boston Tuesday.

While speculation was rampant Monday morning within WEEI's Brighton offices that Brown had actually been fired, an Entercom spokesman confirmed Brown's statement that it was his choice to leave.

In a statement, Entercom station group president Weezie Kramer wished Brown the best, thanking him for "his many professional contributions along the way that have made Entercom a better company."
