Bishop Connolly

  • Last year's record: 1-9
  • Strength: Work ethic.
  • Concerns: Depth.
  • Coach: Justin Kogler (1st season)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games

With only one win (1-9) under the team's belt last season, the only way to go this year is up. The Mayflower Small League, with teams like Blue Hills and Tri-County, isn't going to give up games. But with a new coach and a new philosophy Bishop Connolly should improve.

Blue Hills

  • Last year's record: 10-1
  • Strength: Team unity, ability to work and learn together. And of course, Vincent Burton.
  • Concerns: "Youthful" is the term coach Ed Catabia used to describe a young Warriors squad this season, noting they aren't as far along as last years group of veterans were at the start of the season but have improved with each scrimmage and practice.
  • Coach: Ed Catabia (5th season, 31-13)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 5 lettermen

The defending Super Bowl champs graduated a lot of talent, including their starting quarterback and a starting running back, but still return key pieces from last year's squad returning, including Divison 4A Player of the Year Burton, tight end David Neil, and defensive lineman Kevin O'Callaghan. It also doesn't hurt that the new crop of players coming up from junior varsity have not lost a game in three years, according to Catabia.

  • Last year's record: 2-9
  • Strength: Off-season workouts
  • Concerns: Depth and injuries.
  • Coach: John Parris (6th season, 20-22)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games

The biggest need for B-P is improvement on the offensive side of the ball where the Craftsmen scored just 11.3 ppg. B-P is just three years removed from an 8-2 season.

  • Last year's record: 7-4
  • Strength: Skill positions.
  • Concerns: Depth, learning the playbook.
  • Coach: Richard Vickrey (7th season)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 7 lettermen

With a young team set to start a new season, coach Richard Vickrey is focused most on getting the players to jell and learn the playbook. The team has steadily improved over the past few seasons and entered the playoff conversation before losing, 6-0, to eventual Super Bowl champion Blue Hills at the tail end of last season. Vickrey believes if the team's backfield, comprised of four-year players Alex Medeiros and Mike Ferreira can get started early, the team will be in position to make some noise.

  • Last year's record: 6-5
  • Strength: Work ethic. Offensive and defensive lines. Coachable attitudes.
  • Concerns: Depth. Inexperience. Inexperience at quarterback.
  • Coach: Dan Tripp (4th season, 20-14)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 6 lettermen
    • Rich Alger, QB/WR, 2014

Going into his fourth season at the helm for the Hawks, Dan Tripp has no problem conceding last season was a disappointment. He pins the onus on himself and his coaching staff. "We need to focus more on fundementals as a coaching staff. We focused too much last year on the X's and O's of the game and not enough on the basics. We have to focus more on the fundemantals like blocking and tackling and try to not get too crazy and just let the kids play and have fun," he said. One player to watch is senior runner Demetrius Fontes-Semedo, who missed five games last season and still emerged as one of the team's leading rushers. Tripp believes if Fontes-Semedo can turn the corner the Hawks will be soaring.

  • Last year's record: 8-2
  • Strength: Defensive line. Skill at quarterback and wide receiver.
  • Concerns: Inexperience on the offensive line and in the backfield.
  • Coach: Anthony Mazzola (3rd season, 11-10)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 8 lettermen
    • Andrew Robinson, WR, 2014

Coach Mazzola banks on the ability of his defense, especially the defensive line to help produce wins. The surge will start with defensive lineman and team captain Ethan Hicks (6-foot-1, 195 pounds). The offense was slowed with the loss of Tyler Kaufman (1,540 rushing yards, 22 TDs) to graduation but Mazzola is confident junior quarterback Matt Donovan and receivers Spencer St. Pierre and Andrew Robinson will supplement the loss of offensive productivity. After turning a 3-8 record the season prior into an 8-2 record last season, the Cougars are even hungrier this year.

Everett at Leominster

The Crimson Tide take a 25-game winning streak into this game against the reigning CMass Division 1 Super Bowl champs.

With Troy Flutie and company on one side and Ozzy Colarusso on the other side, all signs point to a great, high-scoring game.

Cathedral at Pope John

A rematch of the game that decided the Central Catholic Small winner in 2011. Cathedral won, 16-12, and went on to the Super Bowl.
