Many teams suffer in the year following a championship victory, often struggling to replace departed stars who had helped them reach the previous year's heights. With seven offensive returners and nine on defense, Duxbury, which went a perfect 13-0 last year to win gold in the Division 2A Super Bowl at Gillette, is not one of those teams. Duxbury will once again be led by senior quarterback Matt O'Keefe. Coach Dave Maimaron said O'Keefe's experience and athleticism will make Duxbury's 2011 offense again one of the toughest in the state. "It allows us to be a little more creative, gameplan-wise," said Maimaron. "Hopefully he makes the right decisions." Past O'Keefe, offensive linemen Gordon Acha and Rob Kosharek should be stellar; defensively, middle linebacker Max Randall and safeties Reilly Naton and James Burke should keep opposing receivers tied up. The Dragons' offensive line is green after Acha and Kosharek, though, and could struggle to protect Keefe from the better pass rushes in the state.

  • Last year's record: 6-4
  • Strength: Skill positions.
  • Concerns: Inexperienced linemen.
  • Coach: Paul Killinger (15th season, 59-37)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 9 lettermen
    • Hunter Brown, T, Junior, 6-3, 205
    • Liam Koenen, WR, Junior, 6-3, 190
    • Kevin McCarthy, RB, Senior, 6-1, 205
    • Reid Mcleod, QB, Senior, 6-2, 170
    • Austin Murphy, C, Senior, 5-11, 200
    • Rob Murray, FB, Senior, 5-10, 200
    • Timmy Schiosky, OG/MLB, Senior, 6-1, 200
    • Ricky Sullivan, FB/RB, Junior, 5-9, 180
    • Paul Telsmanick, RT, Senior, 6-0, 220

After the departure of 18 seniors from last year's team, Hingham's got a lot rebuilding ahead of it in the 2011 season. Fortunately, the Harbormen return much of last year's talent at skill positions. "We'll be fine, we'll be competitive," said Paul Killinger. "We'll rely on our skill kids to get us through. Team speed will be our asset." All-league senior captain Kevin McCarthy, a 6-foot 1-inch 205-pound running back, will be a key contributor on Hingham's offense. Senior quarterback Reid McLeod is back as well, as is senior fullback Rob Murray. Hingham's line was hit hardest by graduation, and returns just one regular starter in Timmy Schiosky.

North Quincy

  • Last year's record: 6-5
  • Strength: Experienced skill players.
  • Concerns: Depth and inexperience on the offensive line.
  • Coach: Jim Connor (6th season, 23-32)
  • Playing surface: Artificial turf
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 3 lettermen
    • Marquis Chase, HB/C, Senior, 5-11, 175
    • Johannes Harten, SS/SE, Junior, 5-11, 165
    • Vinny Tran, T/OG, Sophomore, 5-10, 185

While North Quincy boasts some top talent in a few positions, graduation ravaged its roster and reduced it to just 35 players. Coach Jim Connor said this season rests on the shoulders of the new guys. "It will take a lot of underclassmen stepping up, not just filling voids but being key players for us," said Connor. "How well our underclassmen respond will dictate our success." Marquis Chase is expected to be a stud at halfback and cornerback, as is fullback/linebacker Walter Hannon. Coach Jim Connor said he's incorporating a wing-T offense from which he's expecting good things. The offensive line was hit hard after last season, and will likely be the biggest area of concern for this young team.

Silver Lake

  • Last year's record: 7-4
  • Strength: Team chemistry.
  • Concerns: Experience.
  • Coach: Mike Aveni (1st season, 0-0)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 6 lettermen
    • Pat Finn, QB/LB, Senior, 5-10, 190
    • Nick Gormley, TE/LB, Senior, 6-0, 195
    • Jackie Hurley, RB/DB, Senior, 5-9, 175
    • Tyler Llerena, WR/OLB, Senior, 6-2, 190
    • Tim Skerry, RB/LB, Senior, 5-10, 175
    • Nate White, OT/DE, Junior, 6-2, 225

With just two returning starters, and only six returning lettermen, Silver Lake will have a tough time against many of the teams on its difficult 2011 schedule. Senior captains Jackie Hurley (running back/defensive back) and Tim Skerry (running back/linebacker), are the most experienced and are the sole returning starters of the group. Fortunately for first-year head coach Mike Aveni, who has spent the last five years as offensive coordinator, his group's selfless, team-first attitude should allow it to become more than the sum of its parts."They're a group that's just coming in here without experience, they've really been working, pulling for each other," said Aveni. "They've just been working really well together to make each other better, which is really what we're looking for."

  • Last year's record: 2-8
  • Strength: Team speed and athleticism.
  • Concerns: New systems under new coach.
  • Coach: Mike Driscoll (1st season, 0-0)
  • Playing surface: Artificial turf
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 12 lettermen
    • David Bailey, RB, Senior, 5-8, 185
    • Corey Burns, LB, Senior, 6-1, 220
    • John Caliri, QB, Senior, 5-11, 175
    • David Colclough, WR/DB, Senior, 5-11, 175
    • Cory Gilbert, LB, Senior, 5-10, 175
    • AJ Glynn, OL, Senior, 6-2, 220
    • Chris McAndrews, OL/DL, Senior, 6-2, 230
    • Ian Monfils, OL/DL, Senior, 6-2, 235
    • Hank Moylan, WR/DB, Senior, 6-0, 180
    • Jerry Thompson, LB, Junior, 5-10, 185
    • Mario Thompson, RB, Junior, 5-9, 160
    • Anthony Villanueva, WR/DB, Senior, 6-0, 175

There was a time when Whitman-Hanson couldn't find enough room in its trophy case for all its conference titles, but a decade-long title drought has left the Panthers with little vestiges of that storied history remaining. This year's edition of the team could change that. With its sheer athleticism (20 players with sub-five second 40-yard dashes) and a new head coach at the helm, this year could be the one in which Whitman-Hanson returns to glory. Senior captain David Bailey, a running back and linebacker, has the strength and speed to be a game-changer on both sides. Ian Monflis, also a senior captain, plays both lines and should be a leader on and off the field. New coach Mike Driscoll, an on-field veteran of the team's glory days, is also shaking up the gameplan, running a spread offense and an attack-heavy defense.
