Veteran coach Bill Maver graduated 21 seniors last year, the majority of them starters, so the Colonials will be working toward a common rebuilding goal this season. "We've been in this situation before," Maver said. "Hopefully the seniors who haven't played much will come through this year." One of the few experienced seniors back on the squad is quarterback Ethan Dukes. The 6-foot, 205-pound senior will double as a linebacker. Seniors Matt Marcotte (5-9, 210) and Brooks Poulin (6-0, 215) return to their starting roles on the defensive line. The Warriors are ready to rumble this year, with an arsenal of returning seniors at the helm to make a potent season possible. Coach Tom Lopez welcomes back 15 starters, only four of which play two ways, allowing the remainder to focus solely on one position. One of those players is quarterback Matt Cahill, who last year threw for 1,200 yards and rushed for 400 more. Teammates Chris Giorgio (RB/LB) and Brian Carroll (RB/DB) are back as well and contributed 400 yards each in 2010. "We have a lot of returning guys who played a lot last year," Lopez said. "We'll be able to do a lot of things now." Many of those things will be possible thanks to the presence of senior running back Dan Cellucci who started as a sophomore but missed the entire 2010 season due to an injury he sustained to his big toe while playing baseball. While the outlook is bright, Lopez still believes there is room for improvement. "We have to work on becoming better overall," Lopez said. "We get into ruts. Last year was last year and we're trying to teach them that." The veteran coach is working on getting his team in the football mindset before the season opener. "Success is based on an attitudinal thing rather than a physical thing with us," Lopez said.

Heading in to year six, coach Ted Dalicandro knows what it's going to take to win games: stay competitive. "I think we've done a good job of staying competitive in the quarters and for a half, but the next step for us is to win the close games," Dalicandro said. "Before, we weren't competitive at all." Dalicandro has nine returning starters, each playing two sides of the ball. "Athletically, we're okay," Dalicandro said. "We've got some new guys playing. Depth is going to be an issue." The roster boasts 55 players, 15 more than the average Newton South squad. "We've gotten more kids to come out and participate," Dalicandro said. "They're doing an okay job. They've got to turn around and get an attitude for winning." Look for an explosive sophomore class to make an impact this season.

Waltham begins a new era with John Bourque beginning his first year as head coach. But give Bourque time and the Hawks will challenge in one of the state's most competitive leagues.

Westford coach Rich McKenna hopes his third season as head coach will be the charm. ''Our overall toughness has gotten much better," McKenna said. ''I think we should be able to run the football pretty well and we have a solid offensive line." Running back Al Eaton will be a topic of discussion in the league this year. The 5-foot-10-inch, 200-pound Bishop Guertin transfer will start at running back. Six-foot-3-inch, 205-pound wide receiver Justin Mount will play receiver for the squad. He'll double as a defensive back. With the solid group of returning starters, McKenna thinks ''We'll be right in the mix with the rest of them. It's going to be pretty competitive."
