Former Sharon coach Brian Chamberlain is taking the reigns at Braintree and hopes that getting back to basics will be a recipe for success for the Wamps. "I'm intrigued as to why there are so many players here and no success," Chamberlain said. "I'm getting back to fundamental teaching and working on football IQ. I don't think it was that strong before." Chamberlain is glad that the players are embracing his coaching style and hopes that he can duplicate the same success he did at Sharon. When he started at Sharon, the roster only had 24 players. When he left, it boasted 77. In terms of talent, Braintree is big up front on both sides of the ball, but there is also a lot of fresh talent to mold. "These kids are tired of being 3-8 and asked why they're not winning," Chamberlain said. "This year we aren't looking at wins and losses, we want to play a complete four quarters. Our goal is to get better every week - the wins will come."

When Kevin Mahoney took over the Brookline program last season, it was less than impressive. Coming off of a 1-10 season in 2009, he had hopes of using 2010 as a rebuilding year and is confident he accomplished his goal. The Warriors are returning 16 starters, including senior running back Stephen O'Neil who rushed for 1,100 yards last year, and sophomore superstar Nick Scott who has played a slew of offensive positions in his time at Brookline. Scott will start at quarterback this year after playing running back and center in the wildcat formation last year. "We really want to be competitive this year," Mahoney said. "Our best season since 2003 was a three-win season."

Eight returning starters shore up twelve positions for the Flyers in 2011, but it will be a matter of how well the holes get filled that could determine their fate this year. "We are like a lot of teams in that we are trying to find the missing pieces at some positions," said head coach Gary Doherty, who enters his fourteenth season with Framingham. Senior quarterback Greg Finley returns to lead the offense after accounting for 20 touchdowns a season ago. With another year under his belt and the help of returning receivers Bolander Lewis, Michael Stearns, and Donald Goff, expect big things from Finley and the Flyer offense. The defense will be led by senior linebackers Mitchell Guarino and Corey McGrath along with Finley, Lewis and Stearns who return to the defensive backfield. Goff and junior Allan Lamas will anchor the defensive line. "The key for us is staying healthy and being smart with the football," said Doherty.

Needham graduated all-star quarterback Kevin Brennan this year, but coach David Duffy is confident in the ability of the returning starters to overcome the deficit left by Brennan's absence. Six-foot, 1-inch Drew Burnett will step into the quarterback slot to anchor the Rockets. Burnett started three games last year. Look out for senior tight end Mark Reilly and senior cornerback Ian Reilly to make a big splash this season. Heading into game one, Duffy thinks the fight to the top of the Bay State (Carey) will be a tough one this season. "It'll be a battle to see how well we can play every week," Duffy said. "If we stick together and get through adversity then we should be all right."

Tigers coach Peter Capodilupo is excited at the prospect of the 2011 season. "We've got a good senior group," Capodilupo said. "If things all fall into place with our four captains that are offensive linemen and returning starters, we can be very physical." Those four captains are Pat Bryson, Mike Bradley, Brendan Fagan and Swardiq Mayanja. Each captain is a two-way player. Newton North has finished 5-6 the past two seasons, so Capodilupo is hopeful his squad can break .500 this year.

Weymouth steamrolled the competition in 2010 and skated to an 11-0 finish in the regular season but met its match in the postseason. The Wildcats lost to Super Bowl runner up, Bridgewater-Raynham, in the opening round of the playoffs. This year, the Wildcats are without All-Scholastic running back Dylan Colarusso who contributed 28 touchdowns and 1,800 yards of offense. Coach Kevin Mackin is aware that it's going to take a lot to replace him. "It's a worry for sure," Mackin said. "We had a great class and a great year. But this is what makes high school football exciting." Weymouth also lost league all-star quarterback Mitch Temple, but welcomes back senior captain Khary Bailey-Smith at split end and Colarusso's younger brother, Ozzie, who will spend time playing both running back, wide receiver, and cornerback. Mackin is ready to put last year behind the team and start fresh. "They've already received their high fives for last year," Mackin said. "The seniors here are chomping at the bit to get going."
