Athletes of the Year
Division 2SS: Franklin
The three-time Hockomock League All-Star and 2010 MVP birdied the 18th hole at Pocasset GC to secure the Division 2 state championship by one stroke. French, who also won the South Sectional with an even par 71, helped lead the South champion Panthers to a second-place finish in the state final.
Division 3: Weston, Senior
The Weston senior class co-president won the Division 3 state championship at Longmeadow with a 70. The DCL All-Star finished runner-up at the North Sectionals. During Greb's four years at Weston the Wildcats won four DCL championships, four sectionals and two state titles. Greb will attend Brown.
Division 1: St. John's Prep, Junior
The Division 1 state final runner-up by one-stroke, McLaughlin carried a 37 scoring average this season, while averaging 15 putts-per-round. McLaughlin, who was the Massachusetts Junior Champion in '09, helped lead the Eagles to the Division 1 North title with a 74, tying for third-place. He also plays basketball and tennis.
Whelan garnered EIL MVP honors for the second straight year, as he led Pingree to an undefeated season (16-0) and league crown. The two-time all-scholastic had a 1-under-par (35) scoring average for the season. Whelan also played baseball and basketball and has committed to Loyola (Md.) to play golf.
The Division 3 North Sectional champion (72) and state final runner-up (72) has been a part of three state championship teams. Caro cocaptained the Wildcats to an undefeated season, clinching the DCL Small title (10-0) for the fourth time in his career. Caro also enjoys MMA, wrestling and tennis.
The 2009 Division 3 Player of the Year finished runner-up in the Division 1 state match at Longmeadow CC, shooting a 71. At the Division 1 North sectional, his 76 was good enough for a fifth-place tie. The DCL All-Star and honor student shot a league-record 5-under-par 31 in September at Sandy Burr Country Club.
Central Catholic, Freshman
Greenleaf took the Merrimack Valley Conference by storm, carding a 73 in the MVC championship to become the first freshman to win the title. He finished the season undefeated and was sixth in the Division 1 North (77) and fifth in the Division 1 state championship (75).
Lang posted a 7-1 record in match play for the Minutemen. He placed second in the Division 1 North Sectionals with a score of 73 and tied for fifth in the state final with a 75. A Middlesex League All-Star, the sophomore also plays baseball and tennis for Lexington.
A four-time Patriot League All-Star and three-time All-Scholastic, Montt was second at the Division 2 state championship with a 75 and has played for Team USA and Team New England. A honor student, he plans to play golf at the University of Rhode Island.
Bishop Stang, Junior
A repeat All-Scholastic selection, Murphy was runner-up in the Division 3 South Sectionals with a round of 79 and placed second in the states with a 72. The junior and Eastern Athletic Conference All-Star was the medalist in all but one of the Spartans' 14 matches this season.
BC High, Junior
O'Leary posted a 76 to tie for fifth-place in the Division 1 South sectional. The Eagles' No. 1 player went on to tie for fourth-place in the state championship with a 73. O'Leary, who's an honor student, also volunteers his time at the Boys and Girls Club in Dorchester.
St. John's Prep, Junior
The Division 1 North Sectional Champion hit 60 percent of his fairways, 60 percent of his greens in regulation and averaged 16 putts per round on his way to a 38 scoring average this season. He tied for third-place in the states at Longmeadow, shooting a 73. Pandelena also plays hockey and carries a 4.2 GPA.
This first-team Bay State Conference All-Star and cochampion tied for first in the Division 1 South sectionals, shooting a 74. Shuman tied for eighth in the Division 1 state championship. The honor student also plays basketball for the Rockets.
Stoddard led the Green Dragons to their second consecutive Division 2 state title, finishing third with a 76. In the sectionals, his 74 tied for second. The National Honor Society member and four-year letterman captained a Duxbury team that finished atop the Patriot League with a record of 17-3.
Newton South, Senior
The DCL All-Star returned to play for the Lions after taking the last 3 seasons off and contributed immediately. Stumpo shot a 74, tying for third-place in the Division 1 North Sectionals at Beverly GC and went on to card a 73 in the state championship at Longmeadow, once again tying for third-place.
Wronoski picked a good time to win his first ever tournament, as he recorded six birdies on his way to shooting an even-par 70 to win the Division 1 state championship at Longmeadow CC. The Bay State League All-Star plans to play in the Mass. Amateurs and Mass. Open.
coach of the year
The Titans went 15-3 and finished second in the state finals. Since taking over as coach in 2004, Consolati has gone 95-11-1, winning six straight Patriot League Titles, two South Sectional titles, and registering three top-10 finishes in the Division 3 state championships.
St. John's Prep
The four-time Globe Coach of the Year led the Eagles to a 13-3-0 season, winning the Division 1 North and state titles. The Boston College graduate has compiled a record of 313-25-7 in his 22 years of coaching, including 14 Division 1 North titles and six State Championships.
In his 21st year, Stoddard led the Green Dragons to a 17-3 record. The team defended its Division 2 South title, as well as its state championship. The state win gives Stoddard five state championships. This is the second Coach of the Year award for the New Hampshire grad.
