Athletes of the Year
Division 1: Whitman-Hanson, Junior, Forward
The Panthers were glad to have Mewis back in 2009, after a year with the US U-17 team. The Patriot League MVP scored 32 goals and tallied 12 assists while leading the Panthers to their first Division 1 South title. Mewis has already committed to play at UCLA.
Division 2: Duxbury, Senior, Forward
The two-time Globe All-Scholastic scored 32 goals and added 23 assists in 2009. The captain led the Patriot League in scoring and was named to the All-State team, finishing her career with 142 total points. Burke will take her scoring exploits and 4.2 GPA to Dartmouth College.
Division 3: Millis, Senior, Defense
This 2009 All-State player and Tri-Valley MVP will not soon be forgotten at Millis, as she captained the Mohawks to their first state championship. The two-time EMass All-Star stopper also contributed on offense, scoring four game-winning goals.
Winchester, Senior, Forward
Following up a Middlesex MVP campaign in 2008, the 2009 EMass All-Star recorded 29 goals and 16 assists this year. The sniper has been named to all-conference, all-New England, and All-State teams.
Waring, Sophomore, Midfield
Already a two-time league MVP and repeat All-Scholastic, the sophomore center midfielder finished her second season with 17 goals and 15 assists in leading Waring to the IGC title. She is also a member of the lacrosse and basketball teams.
Acton-Boxborough, Senior, Forward
Brock finished 2009 with 31 goals and 14 assists, despite having one or two defensive shadows each game. The Penn State-bound striker was named to the EMass, All-New England, and All-State teams. The 2007 Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year finishes her career with 75 goals and 39 assists.
Peabody, Freshman, Forward
The Northeastern Conference Player of the Year led Eastern Mass. with 45 goals and 61 points and was named to the EMass, All-State, and All-New England first teams. Dowd excelled in the playoffs as well, scoring two second-half goals in a win over undefeated Winchester in the Division 1 North semifinal.
Phillips Andover, Senior, Defense
Fang was the cornerstone of an Andover defense that carried a seventh seed in the NEPSAC tournament to three straight 1-0 wins over the second, third, and first seeds to win the championship. Her perfect direct kick from 40 yards set up the winning goal in the championship game.
Acton-Boxborough, Senior, Defense
The two-time Dual County League first-team All-Star helped the Colonials surrender only five goals, recording 19 shutouts along the way. The captain helped the Colonials to an 87-4-2 record (67 shutouts) for her career. Giglio has a 4.2 GPA and will play soccer at Holy Cross.
Masconomet, Senior, Midfield
The Sacred Heart-bound center midfielder was the Cape Ann League's leading scorer and co-Player of the Year this season. A three-time CAL All-Star and 2009 EMass first-team honoree, Gildein totaled more than 100 points in four varsity seasons, leading the Chieftains to three straight CAL titles.
Lynnfield, Senior, Forward
The All-State selection leaves as the Pioneers' all-time leading scorer with 87 goals and 35 assists. The striker had a banner year in 2009, being named the Cape Ann League co-Player of the Year. The All-New England selection and EMass All-Star also was the CAL Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008.
Central Catholic, Senior, Goalkeeper
The Merrimack Valley Player of the Year and All-State selection allowed just 0.75 goals per game in 2009. The EMass first-team keeper is also a two-time Bay State Games participant, earning a silver medal this year. In two years as the varsity starter, Hoole has 23 shutouts.
Newton Country Day, Junior
The MVP of the EIL, Howe was the leading scorer in the conference tallying 22 goals and eight assists this season, while helping to lead NCD to the EIL title. She is an honors student who also plays club soccer for Inter SC in Boston.
Milton Academy, Senior, Forward
Milton Academy's leading scorer this year and for all four years she's played, Leon was the ISL's Offensive MVP this fall. She's a three-time ISL All-Star and was the team captain this fall. Leon also plays basketball and runs track and she's committed to Columbia to play soccer.
Cardinal Spellman, Senior, Midfield
Martell was instrumental in Cardinal Spellman's Division 2 state championship victory. An attacking midfielder with a defensive mindset, Martell was named to the All-State team in 2009. The National Honor Society Student is also a two-time EMass All-Star.
Brooks, Senior, Midfield
A three-time all ISL player, Moschitto capped a brilliant career with 10 goals and six assists in helping lead Brooks to a 9-2-3 season. She is also a two-time ISL all-star in ice hockey for Brooks. The honor student plans to play soccer at Dartmouth.
Danvers, Sophomore, Forward
The All-American scored 42 goals in just her second high school season, and added 13 assists. Persson, an avid skier and snowboarder, has accumulated 66 goals and 26 assists in just two seasons.
Danvers, Junior, Forward
An All-State selection, this scoring dynamo netted 38 goals and 16 assists in 2009. Russo has already compiled an impressive resume that includes three Northeastern Conference All-Star teams and two EMass All-Star selections. Russo will enter her senior season with 77 goals.
Winchester, Senior, Midfield
The Middlesex League MVP dominated the middle of the field for the Sachems, recording 10 goals and 12 assists in 2009. Savoy is a true two-way player; her defensive efforts helped the Sachems to the Division 1 North semifinals. The two-time EMass All-Star is a proven winner, leading the Sachems to a 33-0-3 record in her final two seasons.
Dedham, Senior, Forward
The Bay State League MVP is the leading scorer in Dedham history with 122 points. The four-time Bay State All-Star had 23 goals and 12 assists this season to earn All-New England and All-State first-team honors. The South MVP in the EMass All-Star game will play soccer at Boston College.
Coach of the Year
Whitman-Hanson, Division 1
Floeck led the Panthers to an 18-2-3 mark and the school's first Division 1 South Sectional title. The EMass Soccer Coaches Association tabbed Floeck as their Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Cardinal Spellman, Division 2
After an impressive 21-2-1 regular season, the Cardinals won the Division 2 state championship under Perry's guidance. He was named the Globe's Division 2 Coach of the Year in 2006 after he took Cardinal Spellman to the state finals.
Millis, Division 3
Also named the 2009 EMass Girls' Soccer Coach of the Year, Cutler led Division 3 champ Millis to its first state title. The Mohawks bought into Cutler's defensive philosophies, allowing just two goals in seven postseason games.
