Alderman capped an undefeated regular season by winning the state individual singles title in straight sets. A freshman, she is ranked in the top three in New England and top 40 nationally among under-16 girls by the USTA. Her interests include traveling.
Bentivegna teamed with fellow All-Scholastic Meghan Talerman to reach the finals in the South sectional individual tournament. A top student (3.96 GPA), Bentivegna was a volleyball state champion in 2008. She will further hone her volleyball skills with the Mass Patriots this summer.
Corning is the top-ranked tennis player in New England and is among the top 50 in the nation. She never lost a set at first singles at Pingree. She will attend Boston College on a full athletic scholarship.
King Philip, Junior
Along with Sarah Shipley, Embree was part of a dominant doubles team that advanced to finals of the state individual tournament. She's put together back-to-back undefeated seasons in the Hockamock League. Embree hopes to study nursing in college.
Like her doubles partner, Kaila Nelson, Erbafina is a ranked youth player by the USTA. She finished in the top 30 for girls under 14 and is currently in the top 50 for girls under 16. Undefeated at first doubles as a freshman, she qualified for New England's under-14 sectional tournament.
Fleming joins an older brother and sister as a Globe All-Scholastic and hopes to follow in their footsteps as a Division 1 college tennis player. The two-time All-Scholastic advanced to the finals of the South sectional this season. She also plays varsity basketball and volleyball.
Lamachia advanced to the semifinals of the North sectional tournament after a 20-0 regular season. The freshman wants to play tennis in college and will play USTA matches this summer. She enjoys reading and playing soccer, basketball, and football.
The 23d-ranked player under 18 in New England by USTA, Launie went 22-1 for the Wildcats, reaching the semifinals of the South sectional. The three-time Bay State League all-star has a 66-5 career mark. She hopes to play tennis in college and to be a teacher after graduating.
Li advanced to the final in the individual state singles tournament after an undefeated season. She's only lost one regular-season match in her three-year career. As a freshman, she won a state team championship. She hopes to play tennis in college.
Liu won back-to-back state titles in individual doubles with Jocelyn Lund-Wilde. Liu, a National Honor Society member who plays the violin and enjoys hiking and baking, will attend Cornell to study biological engineering.
Lund-Wilde capped her second consecutive state title in individual doubles with a straight-set win in the championship. This is her second appearance on the All-Scholastic team. The senior, who also played soccer, will study nursing at Boston College.
Nelson played first singles for the Warriors for four straight years. Currently ranked among the top 25 under-18 girls by the Junior USTA, she will play tennis at Villanova next spring.
Nelson is ranked among the top 50 girls 14-and-under in the nation by the Junior USTA. The freshman went undefeated in first doubles in the regular season as the Warriors advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division 1 North sectional.
Prinos, a South sectional singles semifinalist, finished 20th in the USTA New England under-16 division and 32d among girls under 18. She has not lost in Hockomock League p[lay in her two seasons. Ranked first in her class, the sophomore is also a member of SADD, the student council, and the school literary magazine.
Rooney is a two-time New England A singles champion, going undefeated this season to claim the ISL MVP award. This summer, she plans to play USTA national tournaments. She would like to play Division 1 college tennis or attend an Ivy League school.
Shewalter, an honors student at Winchester, helped the Sachems edge Hingham for the Division 2 state title, capping an undefeated season at first singles. She plans to play tennis for a Division 1 school in college.
King Philip, Senior
Shipley reached the state finals in doubles, capping an impressive career in which she went 78-2 in regular-season matches. She also excelled in the classroom; she is valedictorian and an AP Scholar. Shipley will major in chemical engineering at McGill University.
Talerman went undefeated in the regular season, winning the Old Colony League and advancing to the finals of the South sectional individual doubles tournament. An accomplished field hockey player, she will play in the Super Sophomore Classic this summer.
coach of the year
Capone coached her alma mater to its first girls tennis state championship. The Grey Ghosts went 21-2, winning the Division 1 North sectional for the second time under Capone. She also led the team to back-to-back Central Mass. titles in 1991-1992.
In 11 decorated seasons as a high school coach, Polacco's teams are 175-32, helping him win Northeastern Conference coach of the year honors seven times. This year, the Big Blue went 20-1 and reached the Division 2 North sectional final.
Simms coached a young Tigers squad - only one senior - to a 13-6 finish. She has coached for 13 seasons after playing Division 3 tennis at Plymouth State. She is a two-time Cape Ann League coach of the year.
