Athletes of the Year
Division 1: Bridgewater-Raynham, Senior
A two-time All-Scholastic, Campbell hit .507 (with a .658 on-base percentage), slammed two home runs, knocked in 17 RBI, and stole 17 bases. His real value came as a pitcher, going 7-3 with 119 strikeouts in 66 innings and a 0.64 ERA as the OCL co-MVP.
Division 3: Cohasset, Senior
Doonan anchored the Division 4 champions both at the plate (.330 batting average, 28 RBI), on the mound (6-0), and on the basepaths (21 stolen bases). He goes to URI with a .462 career average and has been a key player for the football and hockey teams.
Division 2: Madison Park, Senior
Moquete, a four-year varsity starter, has been the catalyst of the two-time Boston City League champions. He hit .405 with eight homers and 29 RBI, all with an injured shoulder that kept the third baseman from playing his natural position.
Division 1: Gloucester, Senior
Ressel eviscerated opposing pitching, hitting .571 with two homers and 28 RBI after starting the season with 10 consecutive hits. The Northeast Conference MVP is one of the state's top running backs in football, a two-time hockey aall-star, and will attend UMass-Lowell in the fall.
Anderson did it all, setting school records at the plate with 10 home runs and 37 RBI while also hitting .432 and swiping 10 bags. As Lincoln-Sudbury's ace, he also fanned 56 in 46.1 innings and compiled a 1.21 ERA. The junior was named Dual County League MVP.
Blout went from very good the last two years to great this season, going 8-2 with a 0.58 ERA and striking out 111 in 72.1 innings. He also hit .380 with a homer. Blout, who graduated with a 4.2 GPA, will play baseball at Wesleyan.
Bunker was a driving force behind Masconomet's one-loss season. The Trinity-bound pitcher went 6-1 with 56 strikeouts in 47 innings while hitting .376 with three homers and 20 RBI as the designated hitter. He also earned All-Scholastic honors during football season.
Lawrence's ace struck out 69 hitters in 67.1 innings en route to a 7-1 record with a 2.18 ERA. The lanky fireballer also hit .378 and knocked in 15 runs while being named Player of the Year in the MVC (Small) for the second straight season.
Connolly hit .388 while smashing seven homers and swiping 13 bags for the Trojans, while going 7-1 on the hill and striking out 73. Also an All-Scholastic in football, the OCL co-MVP hopes to one day coach and will attend Maine in the fall.
Dunn's performance on the mound was a major reason the Chieftains finished undefeated in the regular season and won the Division 2 North title. For the year, Dunn was 10-0 with a 0.71 ERA. He struck out 65 in 59 innings and didn't give up a run in the postseason.
Catholic Memorial, Junior, P
The Catholic Conference MVP, Gorman hit .395 with three homers and 25 RBI for the league champs. As the team's ace, he went 8-0 with a 1.18 ERA, striking out 113 in 65 innings. He hopes to attend Boston College and also captains the football team.
Lexington, Junior, P
The Middlesex League MVP went 8-0 with a 1.51 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 59 innings. The junior southpaw also hit .440 with six homers and 37 RBIs for the league champs. A two-time league all-star, Marcal hopes to play in college.
O'Rourke had a productive post-graduate year at Cushing, striking out 65 batters in 41.2 innings. He allowed just four earned runs all season, registering a 0.67 ERA. O'Rourke will attend Santa Fe College with plans to transfer to a four-year school.
BB&N, Junior, RHP/SS
Perry, who has committed to play baseball at Boston College, led the Knights to their first-ever undefeated season (20-0, 15-0 ISL). The junior struck out 85 batters in 49 innings of work for a spotless 8-0 record and an 0.71 ERA.
A senior starting pitcher, Propernick went the distance in all seven of his starts. In 44 innings, he struck out 72 batters and gave up 28 hits. The senior is an Arizona native and will take his game to Northern Arizona University in the fall.
Silver Lake, P
The only thing that outshined Smith's performance at the plate - a .431 average with two home runs and 14 stolen bases - was his performance on the mound. The Gordon College-bound senior was 9-2 with a 0.85 ERA and struck out 131 in 82 innings.
Oliver Ames, Senior
The Hockomock League MVP smashed 36 hits to set a school record for an Oliver Ames team that went undefeated in league play for the first time and was the top seed in Div. 2 South. Soucie, who also is captains the football team, will attend Westfield St.
The Franklin Pierce-bound Ubele had a .566 batting average with three homers and 29 RBIs, giving him 108 in his career. On the mound, the Dual County League (Small) MVP earned seven wins and compiled a 2.18 ERA while striking out 62 in 58 innings.
Only a junior, Weisman has already pitched a no-hitter and been named CAL (Large) MVP. He hit .431 with three homers and 26 RBIs and went 7-3 with 83 strikeouts in 58.2 innings this season, giving him 17 wins and more than 170 strikeouts in his career.
coach of the year
Afanasiw led Cohasset to its first Division 4 championship and upped his career mark to 25-14 (19-6 this season). The Marshfield graduate attributed the success to "great team chemistry, dependable pitching, solid defense, and timely hitting."
Whittier finished an impressive season as Division 3 North champions after a 20-5 season that ran Boland's 16-year record up to 189-143. He graduated from Haverhill High and Westfield St., and is a former six-year varsity boys' basketball coach.
The 2001 Coach of the Year led the Dragons to a 23-2 record and a Division 2 EMass title in his 18th and final season. Earle, a Hanover graduate and former baseball and basketball player, said that this year's team "epitomized a team effort."
Neilon guided the Lancers to a 38-8 record over the past two seasons, including a school-record 21 victories this season as Lawrence advanced to the Division 1 North final. He is a two-time Merrimack Valley Conference Coach of the Year.
