Defender Gabriel Badilla has been waived by the Revolution, a team source confirmed Wednesday night. The move opens a roster spot which is expected to be filled by Khano Smith, who could be available for their season-opening game in Los Angeles Saturday.

Smith, who performed for the Revolution from 2005-08, has been training with the team as a non-roster player.

The loss of Badilla, who could return to CD Saprissa in Costa Rica, signals the end of an unproductive relationship. The MLS paid a transfer fee of about $300,000 for Badilla, who performed for Costa Rica in the 2006 World Cup, but he has played in only six games since joining the Revolution in 2008.
