GERMANTOWN, Md.—Cindi Harkes -- wife of former U.S. national team captain John Harkes -- has been hired as assistant coach of the D.C. United Women of the W-League.

Harkes, whose maiden name was Kunihiro, was a three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference team selection and an NCAA Academic All-America at Virginia.

In England, she was with the Sheffield Wednesday Ladies and the Stanton Rangers. In the U.S., she played for Maryland Pride, SA United and the Northern Virginia Majestics of the W-League, where she was player-coach.

John Harkes, former captain of D.C. United, is an ESPN soccer analyst.

The D.C. United Women open their season on May 25.
