Freddy Adu scored his first goal as a member of the US national team and Jozy Altidore assisted on Kenny Cooper's sliding shot, leading the Americans to a 2-0 win over Guatemala in a World Cup qualifier in Commerce City, Colo.

The Americans improved to 27-1-7 in home qualifiers since May 1985. The win also prevents Guatemala (1-3-2) from advancing out of Group 1 in the North/Central American and Caribbean semifinal round.

With a spot in next year's regional finals already assured, the US (5-1) went with a largely inexperienced lineup, leaving Landon Donovan and Carlos Bocanegra out.

The youth certainly didn't disappoint as Adu and Altidore stepped up, especially in the second half.

Adu curled a shot into the left corner on a free kick just outside the penalty box in the 69th minute. A diving Ricardo Jerez didn't have a chance on Adu's well-placed shot.

Earlier in the second half, Altidore collected a pass and lined the ball into the box, where a sliding Cooper knocked it by Jerez for his second career goal as a US team member.

Trinidad 3, Cuba 0 - Needing only 1 point to advance out of Group 1 with the US, host Trinidad (3-1-2) received goals from Kenwyne Jones and Dwight Yorke in a two-minute span in the second half to put away Cuba.

Honduras 1, Mexico 0 - Honduras (4-2) got an own-goal from Mexico defender Ricardo Osorio, and finished on top of Group 2 in the North/Central American and Caribbean region. Mexico (3-2-1) also advanced, winning a tiebreaker over Jamaica with a better goal difference.

Jamaica 3, Canada 0 - Luton Shelton scored in the 26th minute but host Jamaica (3-2-1) failed to emerge from Group 2.

Europe World Cup qualifying - The Czech Republic (2-1-1) beat host San Marino, 3-0, moving up to second in Group 3.

Asian World Cup qualifying - Australia improved to 3-0 in Group A, with Mark Bresciano's goal in the fourth minute of injury time providing a 1-0 victory over host Bahrain . . . Japan (2-0-1) stayed 2 points behind Australia by beating Qatar, 3-0. The hosts fell to 1-2-1 . . . South Korea (2-0-1) moved to the top of Group B with a 2-0 win at Saudi Arabia . . . Iran (1-0-2) is second in Group B after a 1-1 draw with the host United Arab Emirates.

Oceania World Cup qualifying - New Zealand (5-1) suffered its first loss, 2-0, to host Fiji, but still advanced to a playoff against the fifth-place Asian team.

International friendlies - John Terry scored on a header in the 84th minute, giving England a 2-1 victory over Germany in Berlin . . . Maxi Rodriguez's goal in the eighth minute gave Diego Maradona a winning start as Argentina coach in a 1-0 victory over Scotland in Glasgow . . . Italy coach Marcello Lippi equaled a record unbeaten streak when his team earned a 1-1 draw with host Greece. Lippi hasn't lost as coach of the team in 31 matches, spanning two stints, matching the record shared by Javier Clemente of Spain and Alfio Basile of Argentina.
