D.C. United took advantage of an own-goal by Chad Marshall and Mario Rodriguez's missed penalty kick to beat the host Columbus Crew, 1-0, last night.
The victory allowed United (6-5-4) to move into a tie for third with Kansas City in the Eastern Conference.
Marshall's error occurred when he attempted to clear a shot from United midfielder Christian Gomez in the 64th minute, but instead booted the ball into his net.
United midfielder Freddy Adu made his first start since returning from the FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands. He was substituted at halftime.
The Crew's John Wolyniec was brought down in the United penalty area in the first half. But United goalkeeper Nick Rimando saved Rodriguez's penalty kick, diving to his right to deflect the ball away from goal.
Earthquakes 2, FC Dallas 2 -- Ricardo Clark scored in the 59th minute as visiting San Jose rallied twice and earned a point.
