Adu helps D.C. United end its four-game skid

Freddy Adu and Earnie Stewart scored first-half goals to help D.C. United snap a four-game winless streak with a 3-1 victory last night over the Colorado Rapids in Washington.

Adu helped D.C. United (6-8-6) earn its first win since beating the MetroStars July 3. The 15-year-old midfielder scored in the 35th minute on a 12-yard shot for his third goal of the season and first since May 19.

Stewart gave D.C. United a 2-0 lead in the 40th minute. After an own goal in the second half, John Spencer scored in the 73d minute for Colorado (6-7-8).

Fire 2, Earthquakes 1 -- Damani Ralph scored on a rebound in the 81st minute to lift host Chicago past San Jose. The win ended the Fire's nine-game winless streak (0-6-3), the worst in franchise history, and allowed them to stay tied for last place with the Revolution in the Eastern Conference.

Earthquake goalkeeper Pat Onstad deflected Andy Williams's shot and Ralph scored from close range. Williams opened the scoring in the 41st minute, converting from 25 yards.

The Earthquakes' Ronnie Ekelund scored on a penalty kick in the 76th minute for a 1-1 tie.

The Fire had 10 on the field after Logan Pause earned a red card in the 42d minute for a hard tackle on Richard Mulroney.
