The United States lost to Germany 1-0 in Thursday’s World Cup match in Recife, Brazil.
Despite the loss, Team USA will still advance to the round of 16 because Portugal beat Ghana 2-1.
Portugal and the US both finished with four points, but the US’ better goal differential sent them through.
Thomas Mueller scored for Germany in the 55th minute.
The Associated Press reported:
The Germans, three-time World Cup champions, finished with seven points, while the US had four after allowing a 95th-minute goal against Portugal on Sunday in a 2-2 draw. Portugal also had four, but the Americans advanced from the so-called ‘‘Group of Death’’ because their goal difference was even and the Portuguese were minus three.
Team USA will face Algeria or Belgium on Monday.

American fans showed out in force.
