A late goal by Eric Buck lifted Brookline over Newton North, 1-0, yesterday in a preliminary round of the Division 1 North boys’ soccer tournament.

The intensity level was ratcheted up in the rematch of last year’s Division 1 North final, as physical play took over for finesse and technicality.

Thirty minutes in, a scuffle ensued on the sideline, leading to confusion as referees and coaches tried to sort things out.

After the piles were separated, Newton North’s Robert Morgan and Brookline’s Travis James both received red cards and were ejected for fighting, which carries a two-game suspension.

With five minutes remaining, Warriors defenseman Ari Zimmet launched the ball from center field into the box. As it bounced around, Saman Abazari found Buck, who buried the game’s only goal.

“I saw it bounce and I just kicked it as hard as I could,’’ said Buck.
