When the final whistle blew Monday, leaving No. 16 Andover and No. 2 Walpole deadlocked, 2-2, in their field hockey showdown, neither team applauded.

The host Golden Warriors (9-1-3) felt they had missed a big opportunity. They led one of the top teams in the state, 2-1, with 13 minutes to play after sophomore Jacqueline Leone netted her second of the game, only to see Walpole’s Melanie Weber tie it minutes later.

The Rebels (12-0-1) suffered — if that’s the right term — their first non-win of the season.

“It was a flat line,” Andover coach Maureen Noone said. “Two great teams.”

Those great teams squared off in a back-and-forth affair, starting when the Rebels went up, 1-0, on Caroline Feeley’s tally in the first five minutes. Leone got it back almost immediately, and the score stayed 1-1 through halftime.
