Roundup: Medford boys rally to tie Somerville in soccer

Down two goals at halftime, host Medford battled back to tie third-ranked Somerville, 2-2, in a boys’ soccer match featuring last season’s Greater Boston League co-champions at Edgerly Field Friday afternoon.

The No. 17-ranked Mustangs (1-0-2) earned a corner kick with 14 minutes to play and with a swarm of white Medford jerseys stacking the box, Nilton Bedoni delivered a perfect ball from the left side that curved into the far top corner of the net.

“The wind was going that way and I thought that I could curve it in,” said Bedoni. “I was very excited. That was nice.”

The Highlanders (0-0-1) gained an early advantage when the referee missed an offside call that allowed Thayrone Miranda to score without a challenge 15 minutes into the game. Miranda also assisted on Somerville’s second goal, scored by Francisco Fernandes Neto.

“We haven’t played in a while,” said Somerville coach George Scarpelli. “Maybe [the team was] a little rusty because they hadn’t seen game action. But you got to expect to be better than that.”

Medford got on the board 16 minutes into the second half when Matheus Anastacio released a booming long ball on a set piece from midfield that Jonathan Pires headed past Somerville goalie Luis Guerra (five saves).

“That’s a typical Medford-Somerville game,” said Medford coach Mike Petrides. “It shows the resilience that our team has. To stick together and come back and fight from a 2-0 deficit, that’s huge, especially against a team as good as they are.”
