Westwood girls’ lacrosse routs Winchester, 19-4

The Westwood girls’ lacrosse team had an early morning and tough game ahead of them Saturday at 10 a.m. The Wolverines were wide awake for their contest though, defeating Winchester, 19-4, at home.

Westwood jumped right on the Sachems, racking up a 10-0 lead through the first 15 minutes of the first half. Winchester entered the contest with a respectable 5-2 record and superstar Megan Hennessey on the roster. The Wolverines didn’t seem intimidated, ending the first half with a 13-1 lead.

“It’s been a tough time with no practice the past few days and Winchester is a talented team. I felt we had to strike first,” said Westwood coach Leslie Frank.

The Wolverines carried that early momentum over to the second. Led by Ella Hazar and Brooke Joy, Westwood tallied another six goals. Hazar led Westwood with six goals. Joy finished right behind her teammate with five.

Winchester was able to slow down the Wolverines in the second half but the Sachems didn’t start to capitalize until late.

“They can put the ball in the net,” Frank said. “You can’t play halfway [with them]. I think late they were getting frustrated. Another day, the score could’ve been different.”

The Wolverines are one of few teams to hold the Sachems to fewer than 15 goals this season. Winchester scored 15 or more goals against Bishop Fenwick, Belmont and Framingham earlier this year. The Sachems won those three games by a combined score of 49-25.
