A first for St. Mary’s
Magaery shootout goal produces win
St. Mary’s of Lynn notched its first Super 8 victory, 3-2, over Springfield Cathedral Wednesday night, with captain Brendan Magaery’s scoring the winning goal in the shootout at Lawler Arena in North Andover.
“It’s a funny sport because last game we played great and lost in a shootout and today we played lousy and won in the shootout,’’ said St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee.
At 2:09 in the first period, the Spartans notched the first goal as Cam O’Neill floated in front of Cathedral’s John Liquori and executed a backhanded wraparound.
A little over three minutes later it was 2-0 when junior forward Bobby Mullins wristed one over Liquori’s pads.
Cathedral’s Peter Crinella pulled the Panthers within one at 9:14. The freshman forward won the faceoff in the left circle of the offensive zone and wristed one above the shoulders of Bailey MacBurnie.
Cathedral tied it at 2 at 6:08 of the second off its second power play of the night. Cullen Geary wristed a blue line shot that got a friendly tip from a Panther stick to float by MacBurnie.
“Things just weren’t going our way and we just kept fighting and fighting,’’ said Lee.
After a scoreless OT, Cathedral’s Matt Foley and Frank Crinella and Mullins and Jarrod Fitzpatrick of St. Mary’s notched shootout goals, leaving it to Magaery.
He flew down the ice from the right ride, deked twice, and sneaked the puck left under the pads of Liquori.
“I had no plan going in, I felt like coming down I’d find my spot and go for it,’’ said Magaery. “He was coming more to the left, so I wanted to deke backhand real quick, go left, and luckily snuck it through. It’s an unreal feeling.’’
“The guy who scored isn’t one of our biggest goal scorers,’’ said Lee. “He was our waterboy when he was 6 years old, watching his older cousin play. To go up through the ranks and now as a senior captain scoring the game-winning goal, that’s a sweet story right there.’’
