Charlestown KO’s rival East Boston
Tyrik Jackson’s 20-point, 10-rebound effort led Charlestown over East Boston, 61-58, in the quarterfinals of the Division 1 North Sectional yesterday.
Jackson netted 13 of his team-high 20 points in the second half as the Townies (18-4) rallied to defeat the Jets, who were fresh off winning the Boston City League championship.
“I thought Jackson played with confidence today,’’ said Charlestown coach Edson Cardoso. “Ever since we played Brockton High School [last month] and [Jackson] went against Brockton’s 6-foot-8 kid [Sayvonn Houston], he’s become more confident with his offensive moves and more aggressive.’’
The Boston City League rivals played at the home of the Jets (18-5).
“It was a tough environment, but I told my guys that this was a winnable game if we played together as a team,’’ said Cardoso.
Omar Orriols chipped in with 17 points and nine rebounds for the Townies.
Orriols connected on the Townies’ only 3-pointer of the game with 30 seconds remaining in the second quarter to send Charlestown into intermission trailing, 30-29.
Tyrik Jackson’s dunk, set up by a nice pass from Rony Fernandez (9 points, five assists) with 1:25 remaining in the third, tied the game at 40. However, the Jets, led by Kyle Fox (20 points, including five 3-pointers) refused to allow the Townies to take the lead, and the teams entered the fourth tied at 46.
Orriols finally gave the Townies the lead on the quarter’s opening play, driving the lane, getting fouled, and hitting the shot to put Charlestown up, 49-46.
With the score tied at 54 and 1:45 to play, Jackson grabbed his ninth rebound and put it back to give the Townies a 57-55 edge. Charlestown went up 59-55 on two free throws by Tyrese Hoxter (7 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists) with 40 seconds to play.
The Townies will take on the winner of today’s game between Lowell and top-ranked Central Catholic.
