It was a tough game for reasons beyond hockey. The Walpole girls hockey team was facing Winchester just days after Winchester assistant coach Ed ODonnell had died suddenly while jogging. The game was played on a Sunday after it had been postponed to accommodate the funeral. Following the national anthem, the Walpole girls retreated to their bench and each picked up a rose, which they presented to their counterparts from Winchester. The entire arena was choked up, said Winchester AD Brian Carroll. Winchester won, 2-0, but Walpole was a winner that night as well.
