9. Malden Catholic ices Super 8 crown
Down 3-1 in the second period, it didn't look like Malden Catholic was going to celebrate its first Super 8 title. But a deficit can be a good thing for the Lancers. "We're at our best when we're playing with a sense of urgency," said coach Chris Serino. For proof, look what happened next. Two quick goals tied it and in overtime Brendan Collier's score (left) gave MC a 4-3 win over St. John's Prep and its first hockey title since the Mike Fidler era of 1974. As always, Malden Catholic was led by its high-scoring All-Scholastic first line of Collier, Mike Vecchione, and Ryan Fitzgerald.
