MARSHFIELD - The sopping conditions at James G. Anderson Field may have hindered Sandwich's progress last night, but Marshfield prospered in the rain and clinched its second Atlantic Coast League title in a row with a 41-0 victory.

The Blue Knights went three and out on the first drive of the game. On the punt return, Marshfield junior Steve Sousa was taken down at his 33, but a holding penalty against Sandwich moved the Rams to their 43.

Three plays later, Sousa completed a 62-yard touchdown pass to Jon Mullen, giving the Rams (9-1, 6-0) the lead. Sean Griffith's kick gave Marshfield a 7-0 lead after 3 1/2 minutes.

With eight minutes remaining in the half, Sousa connected with Griffith for a first down on fourth and 9, moving Marshfield to the Blue Knights' 26.

Sandwich (6-4, 4-2) made a defensive stand and took over on downs at their 17 but was unable to move past the line of scrimmage and punted for the fifth time.

"The kids have worked hard, because Sandwich can score points," Marshfield coach Lou Silva said.

"They like to run wide-open formations.

"We worked really hard defensively. The kids wanted to throw a shutout."

Matt DiGrigoli's 5-yard touchdown run with just more than two minutes to play in the first half gave Marshfield a 14-0 lead.

Bob MacNeil scored touchdowns in the third quarter as Marshfield widened the gap to 34-0. MacNeil scored on runs of 4 and 3 yards.

The Rams capped the scoring when senior running back Josh Burba ran up the middle for a 75-yard touchdown with two minutes to play.

"We take pride in our running game," Silva said.

"The kids up front, they're mostly all seniors and they love to run the ball."

The Blue Knights finished with two first downs, one coming from a penalty.
